This Tokyo Metropolitan Government monitoring camera watches the Ayase River at Takumi Bridge in Minami-Hanahata, in Adachi City on the northeastern edge of Tokyo, close to the border with Saitama.
The Ayase River rises in Saitama Prefecture and winds south through the low, flat ground of Adachi and Katsushika before joining the Naka River. This is some of the lowest-lying land in the capital, which is why the river's level matters so much to the neighbourhoods along it. Once ranked among the most polluted rivers in Japan, it has improved considerably over recent decades.
The frame is a quiet residential river scene most of the time, with embankments and low-rise housing on either side. It earns its keep in the rainy season and during typhoons, when it gives a direct view of how high the water has come.
