Chigasaki Southern Beach
About the Chigasaki Southern Beach Camera
Southern Beach is Chigasaki's main stretch of sand on Sagami Bay, an hour or so from central Tokyo on the Tokaido line. The town is one of the homes of Japanese surf culture, and the beach has the settled, year-round feel of a place where people swim in August and paddle out in January.
The landmark is offshore. Eboshi-iwa, a low rock named for its resemblance to a courtier's cap, sits about 1.4 kilometres out and anchors every view from this beach. A monument on the shore is built as an open ring, framing the rock for anyone standing in the right spot.
In winter the air clears and Mount Fuji appears across the bay to the west, often with the Izu peninsula below it. The camera is useful for reading the surf, judging the haze before a Fuji view, and watching the bay during a storm.
