About the Kanda River Iidabashi Camera
This camera is one of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's river-monitoring stations, streamed publicly on its flood-control channel. It watches the Kanda River at Iidabashi, in the Koraku district of Bunkyo City, where the river runs alongside the old outer moat of Edo Castle.
The Kanda River rises at Inokashira Pond in Mitaka and runs roughly 25 kilometres east through the densely built heart of the city to the Sumida River. Because it drains so much paved ground, its level responds to heavy rain within minutes, which is exactly why the city watches it with cameras like this one.
On an ordinary day the view is calm: the channel, the embankment walls and the city pressing in on both sides, with Koishikawa Korakuen and Tokyo Dome a short walk away. During typhoons and summer guerrilla downpours it becomes a live gauge of how fast the water is rising.
