Kanmon Strait From Mojiko

Fukuoka LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Kanmon Strait Camera

The Kanmon Strait is the narrow channel that separates Kyushu from Honshu, with Mojiko on the Kyushu side and Shimonoseki barely a kilometre away across the water. This 4K camera films from the Mojiko side and, unusually, streams live audio, so the ships' horns come through as they pass.

It is one of the busiest waterways in Japan. Hundreds of vessels a day thread through the strait, from coastal freighters to large cargo ships, and the current runs hard enough that transit is carefully managed. The Kanmon Bridge arches overhead between the two shores.

Mojiko itself is worth the look. The district around the station is known as Mojiko Retro, a cluster of preserved early twentieth-century buildings from the port's heyday, and the waterfront promenade faces straight out onto the shipping lane. The operator notes the night exposure is set a little bright so vessels stay visible after dark.
