Miyakojima, Painagama Beach
About the Miyakojima Weather Camera
Okinawa Television (OTV) runs this weather camera on Miyakojima, the island about 300 km southwest of Naha. It looks over Painagama Beach and the harbour in Hirara, the island’s main town, and has streamed live on the station’s news channel since July 2025.
Painagama is the town beach, a short walk from central Hirara, which is why it is the one locals use after work. Miyakojima has almost no rivers, so very little sediment reaches the sea, and that is a large part of why the water here is so clear.
The practical use is the weather. The Miyako Islands lie in the path of many typhoons moving up from the south, and this camera is a quick way to see the wind, rain and sea state before flights and ferries are affected.
