About the Nogawa River Umahashi Camera
This Tokyo Metropolitan Government monitoring camera watches the Nogawa River at Umahashi, in the Kokuryo district of Chofu in western Tokyo.
The Nogawa is one of the gentler rivers in the capital. It rises from springs along the Kokubunji cliff line and flows about twenty kilometres south-east through Koganei, Mitaka and Chofu before joining the Tama River in Setagaya. Long stretches of it have natural banks and walking paths, and it is a favourite with local residents for cherry blossom and birdwatching.
That character comes through on the camera: a greener, more open river scene than the walled channels of central Tokyo. Like the others in the network, though, its job is to show conditions during heavy rain, when the water can rise quickly toward the paths along its banks.
