Zenibako Coast In Otaru

Hokkaido LIVE --:--:-- JST

About the Zenibako Coast Camera

Zenibako is the easternmost district of Otaru, on the shore of Ishikari Bay between the city and Sapporo. Its name translates literally as money box, and the camera is run by a local construction firm, which describes the feed as being in test operation.

The beach here is one of the closest stretches of open coast to Sapporo, which has made it a summer destination for the city and a long-standing spot for windsurfing and surfing. Trains on the JR Hakodate Main Line stop at Zenibako Station a short way inland.

Facing north-west across the bay, the camera gets the weather coming in off the Sea of Japan. Summer brings calm water and beach crowds; from late autumn the same view turns to grey swell and the snow that Hokkaido's west coast takes in quantity.
